Light, resonant with a beautiful warm red colour and nice variety between each body blank set, Japanese Cedar makes a great alternative to traditional guitar making woods such as Mahogany.
Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) is an important timber in Japan, being acclaimed the national tree. It’s light weight and strength have made it a staple in modern light construction. These qualities, combined with it’s easy to work nature and good resonance, have made it a popular choice for Japanese string instruments.
Not commonly available in Europe, Japanese Cedar is a sustainable crop and an interesting modern option for your build. Part of the Cypress family (It’s NOT a Cedar!), you might find it referred to as Sugi.
