And now for the history! The slabs that yielded these tops were cut from a salvaged tree that naturally fell roughly 120 years ago. This tree was one of the true giants of the Californian coast, and estimated to be 2500-3000 years old!
These tops will make some truly fantastic and unique looking instruments! Because these sets were taken from one of the true giants of the Californian Redwoods, the grain is very dense and also close together. It’s next to impossible to count the growth rings without a magnifying glass! So, unlike young redwood timber that can be a little soft due to the wide grain, these ancient sets are good and stiff. Perfect for instrument making!
